I was surprised to learn that one of my favorite research chemicals, Selegiline, was discovered in Budapest at Semmelweis University where it is still being researched today.
Selegiline is an interesting monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) with selectivity to MAO-B in low dose administration. This is in contrast to other MAOIs like Phenelzine, Isocarboxazid or Tranylcypromine, which inhibit both MAO-A and MAO-B regardless of dosage.
Further it is a catecholamine activity enhancer (CAE), meaning it increases the activity of dopamine and norepinephrine without directly releasing them.
For its unique properties Selegiline finds use as a Parkinson's/Alzheimer's medication usually in combination with Levodopa, as a medication for Major Depressive Disorder via transdermal patch, as well as many off-label prescriptions.
The previously unknown CAE properties of Selegiline have made it a popular neuroprotection research chemical, both in lab studies and in anti-aging communities.
